Grounded in the Faith | Message 11: How to Be Filled with the Spirit

The answer, Paul explains, isn't about trying harder. It's about recognizing that the Christian life is impossible without the Holy Spirit living and working within us.

1. The Holy Spirit Gives Us Life

Paul calls the Holy Spirit "the Spirit of life" because He is the One who brings spiritual life to everyone who places their faith in Jesus Christ. Our salvation is not simply the result of a personal decision—it is God's Spirit giving new life to those who believe. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is now at work in every believer.

This truth changes how we see ourselves. While Christians experience struggles and discouragement, our lives are not defined by defeat. God's Spirit lives within us, giving us strength, hope, and the power to walk with Him each day.

2. The Holy Spirit Transforms Our Minds

One of the central themes of Romans 8 is the ongoing battle between our sinful nature and our new spiritual nature. Pastor Richard illustrated this with a modern example: just as social media algorithms become shaped by what we continually engage with, our hearts and minds become shaped by whatever we consistently listen to.

The more we follow the desires of our sinful nature, the more difficult it becomes to resist temptation. But the more we listen to the Holy Spirit, the more our minds are drawn toward God, His truth, and His purposes.

Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time experience—it is a daily choice to surrender our attention, our thoughts, and our hearts to God's leading.

3. The Holy Spirit Dwells Within Every Believer

One of the greatest promises of the New Testament is that every follower of Christ has the Holy Spirit living within them.

Unlike the Old Testament, where God's Spirit came upon individuals for specific purposes and times, believers today experience the permanent presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised His disciples that the Spirit would be with them forever, and Paul reminds us that this promise is fulfilled in every Christian.

This means we don't need to ask whether God is present in our lives. Instead, we are invited to become more aware of His presence and more responsive to His guidance.

4. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us to Live for Christ

Pastor Richard concluded with a simple but memorable illustration.

A work glove cannot accomplish anything on its own. It only becomes useful when a hand fills it. In the same way, we are like the glove, while the Holy Spirit is the hand. Without Him, we cannot accomplish anything of eternal value. But when we surrender ourselves to His control, God works through us in powerful ways.

Every ministry, every act of service, every opportunity to reflect Christ depends entirely on the Holy Spirit's work within us.

A Challenge for This Week

As we continue studying Romans 8 over the coming weeks, Pastor Richard encouraged us to intentionally seek a greater awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence.

Spend time reading Romans 8. Pray, asking the Holy Spirit to help you recognize His guidance in your daily life. Growth may not happen overnight, but as we consistently submit ourselves to God, we become increasingly aware of His presence and His transforming work.

A Spirit-filled life is not about extraordinary experiences—it's about ordinary people learning to depend on the extraordinary power of God every day.
