The Road Less Travelled: Choosing the Narrow Path

“Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction... but small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life.” — Matthew 7:13-14

In Sunday’s message, The Road Less Travelled, Pastor Richard Jackson reminded us that following Jesus means more than belief—it means a daily choice to live differently. Inspired by psychiatrist M. Scott Peck’s book of the same title, Pastor Richard explained that true emotional and spiritual health come from walking the narrow road that Jesus described.

While many take the easy, comfortable path, a few choose the road that leads to life. This path requires self-denial, obedience, and a heart open to transformation.

Drawing from Luke 9:23, Pastor Richard emphasized Jesus’ words:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow me.”

He challenged us to reflect on two key questions:

  1. What are the sins or distractions hindering my growth?
Sometimes, it’s not only sinful actions but habits or attachments—like overuse of social media, certain relationships, or misplaced priorities—that hold us back from growing closer to God.

  2. Am I saying yes to obedience—today, not later?
Obedience often means trusting God even when we don’t understand His plans. Delayed obedience, Pastor Richard warned, can mean missed blessings and lost opportunities for growth.

Choosing the road less travelled means saying no to what pulls us away from God and saying yes to what draws us closer to Him. It’s a call to maturity, courage, and faith. As Pastor Richard reminded us,

“When you say no to something for the sake of God, His yes is greater than you can imagine.”
