Gift Giver
The Holy Spirit for Today

Review by Rev. Dr. Richard Jackson

Craig Keener is a rare individual. He is one of the foremost New Testament scholars in the United States, as well as one of the most spiritually mature and insightful people I have ever met. I had the opportunity to get to know Craig when we were both teaching at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. At that time, Craig was living in a one-bedroom apartment and living with no car and no television. Every penny that he earned beyond his daily necessities was donated to mission work in Africa.

Currently, I am reading Keener’s book on the Holy Spirit. This book is relevant for people who have questions about the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life. Chapters such as “Recognizing the Spirit’s Voice,” “Learning to Hear God’s Heart by the Spirit,” and “The Spirit and How We Live” all deal with this topic. People who have theological questions about the Spirit will find the chapters on speaking in tongues, spiritual gifts, and discerning the Spirit very helpful.

To conclude, Gift Giver is a practical and readable book from a first-rate scholar and a spiritual giant. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about the Holy Spirit. Beyond this book, anything written by Craig Keener is worth reading.
