Baptist World Alliance
The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is a fellowship of Baptist conventions and unions around the world, formed in 1905 during the first Baptist World Congress. Sharing a common faith and bonded together by God’s love, the BWA’s vision is to support, encourage and strengthen one another while proclaiming and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit before a lost and hurting world.
The main focus areas of the BWA are nurturing the passion for missions and evangelism, promoting worship, fellowship and unity, responding to people in need, defending human rights and justice, as well as advancing relevant theological reflection.
The BWA operates through six divisions, including Mission, Evangelism & Theological Reflection; Baptist World Aid; Freedom & Justice; Finance & Administration; Communications; and Promotion & Development. There are departments for men, women and youth.
There are six geographical or regional expressions representing the BWA: the All Africa Baptist Fellowship, the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation, the Caribbean Baptist Fellowship, the European Baptist Federation, the North American Baptist Fellowship, and the Union of Baptists in Latin America. Both the Canadian Baptist Ministries and the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada are members of the North American Baptist Fellowship (NABF). The NABF periodically brings together Baptist leaders for coordinating conversations about mission and ministry on our continent.
The BWA holds an Annual Gathering, usually held in July, and its Executive Committee meetings are usually held in March and July. The Baptist World Congress, the Baptist Youth World Conference and the Baptist International Conference on Theological Education, are held every five years at various locations worldwide.
